HISTORY

In October 1915 a Carnegie library for Carlisle-Haddon Township was assured when the Carnegie Corporation agreed to erect a building.  It was opened in 1916.

On March 19, 1965 the library and all its contents was destroyed by fire.

In December of 1965 the present library was opened.  It was paid for with insurance money and donations from the people of Carlisle, Indiana.

In early 1968 the Carlisle Library Board decided, for financial and other reasons, to merge into the County Library System.  This was accomplished on May 1, 1968.

Our library is 84 years old.  During that period of time we have had only 6 librarians.

The millstones in front of the library were donated by Dick and Judy Lambeth.  The old Ledgerwood Mill was formerly located on their property.
